С кон. 12 в. — в составе Вел. кн-ва Литовского, с 1569 — Речи Посполитой. С 1793 — в составе Рос. империи, с 1795 — уездный город Минской губ. [[Категория:География]]В 1856 в Б. проживало 3157 евреев, в 1861 — 2581, в 1897 — 7722 (51,3%), в 1910 — 10 048 (52,6%), в 1923 — 7212, в 1926 — 8358 (32,4%), в 1939 — 10 011, в 1979 — ок. 1300 (1,3%), в 1989 — 1964 еврея. [[Категория:География]]Евреи жили в Б. с 16 в.; в 1766 в борисовском кагале — 249 чел. В 18—19 вв. евреи Б. вели торговлю лесом и хлебом с [[Ригой]] по Зап. Двине, с губерниями Юга России — по Днепру. Во время Отеч. войны 1812 при отступлении армии Наполеона из России маршал Н.Ш.Удино вызвал к себе 10 местных евреев и потребовал указать ему брод на р. Березина к югу от города, затем оставил троих в качестве «заложников», а прочих отпустил. Как и предполагал маршал, евреи немедленно известили о намерениях французов командующего одной из рус. армий адм. П.В.Чичагова, к-рый передислоцировал свои войска на юг, в то время как Наполеон спешно форсировал реку к северу от Б. Узнав об этом, Чичагов приказал повесить без суда гонцов Мойше Энгельгарда, Лейба Бенинсона и Боруха Гумнера. [[Категория:География]]В 1856 в Б. имелось 7 синагог, в т. ч. хасидские. Духовным лидером любавичских хасидов в Б. был раби Шмуэль-Дойв (1808—1889), автор мн. трудов по философии хасидизма. В кон. 19 в. жители занимались портняжным и ткацким промыслом и торговлей с.-х. продуктами. В Б. евреям принадлежали мелкие лесопильные з-ды и спичечная ф-ка. Во 2-й пол. 19 в. в Б. действовала еврейская школа с преподаванием на рус. яз. В 1901 была открыта еврейская больница. В 1909—10 в Б. — 13 синагог, 2 еврейских кладбища, талмуд-тора, еврейская б-ка, частные еврейские муж. и жен. уч-ща. [[Категория:География]]С нач. 20 в. Б. стал центром деятельности Бунда и сионистов. К кон. 1903 в Б. действовала орг-ция «Поалей Цион», в 1905 — орг-ции социал-сионистов. В 1905 в Борисовском к-те Бунда было 300 чл. С 1900 раввином был Михель Рудельсон (1871—?), с 1929 — Иегуда Рыжик (Семер). В 1920 в Б. произошел погром, устроенный польск. войсками. В 1920 в Б. было создано отд-ние Евсекции. В 1922 была открыта лечебница для больных кожными заболеваниями. В 1923 в Б. прошла антирелиг. демонстрация в Йом-Кипур. В 1929 — антирелиг. демонстрация и сбор серебра. До кон. 1930-х гг. в Б. существовал еврейский дет. дом. [[Категория:География]]2 июля 1941 Б. был оккупирован герм. войсками, в городе создано гетто. 20 окт. 1941 в Б. убито ок. 8 тыс. евреев. В 1947 в Б. имелась незарегистрированная община, действовали 2 миньяна, объединявшие до 80 верующих. В 1947—49 местные власти отклонили ходатайства об открытии синагоги. В 1954 в Б. — 4 миньяна (объединяли до 200 верующих). В нач. 1980-х гг. действовал нелег. миньян (собирался по субботам и праздникам), существовало еврейское кладбище (в 1991 осквернено: повалено св. 70 пам.). С нач. 1990-х гг. начал действовать центр «Хесэд Эмуна», в 1994 — воскресная школа. В 1990 в Б. было создано еврейское культурно-просветит. об-во «Свет меноры». С нач. 1990-х гг. еврейская община борется за возвращение 3 сохранившихся зданий синагог. В 1997 в Б. создано Об-во прогрессивного иудаизма (през. — Раиса Сахнович).
